TAVERN ON RUSH – “AN EXCITING RESTAURANT” – RELOCATES AND REOPENS

According to Crane’s Chicago Business, “Tavern on Rush has served more than 8 million guests over its 24-year storied and star-studded history.” The closure of Tavern on Rush – which streetside signage announces is “an exciting restaurant” – shocked many in Chicago and around the world. Now comes word that this famous institution will be relocating and reopening.

Tavern on Rush (1031 N. Rush), at one time *the* spot to see and be seen in the rollicking Rush Street party zone, announced in August 2022, that they would close their doors – permanently – in January 2023, setting off a moan of dismay among Rush Street regulars and many out-of-towners who remember the good times they had there.

Apparently, the landlord of the Tavern on Rush building raised the rent by something like $30,000, forcing owner Phil Stefani to permanently close the place…but when it came time to say turn off the lights, Stefani suggested to those who came to pay their respects to their favorite restaurant that they should “stay tuned.” That sounded hopeful.

Phil Stefani, a man well known to Chicagoans, is the owner of the Phil Stefani Signature Restaurants, a company owned by Mr. Stefani, his wife Gina, son Anthony and daughter Gina. This powerhouse restaurant group owns and manages a number Chicago venues including Broken English Taco Pub, Castaways Bar & Grill, Tuscany, and many others, all providing a “true Chicago dining experience.”

Now there’s word on the street that Stefani’s Tavern on Rush will be relocated and reopened in the nearby space previously occupied by Nico Osteria (1015 N. Rush). This will be very good news to the many millions of people who considered Tavern on Rush their very own restaurant, a comfortable place serving high-quality food and drink to people committed to having a good time.

At the former Nico Osteria space, Stefani will be taking the basement, kitchen, and all three floors, including the party room. Currently, no roof garden is planned, but you never know, and chatting with former managers at the original Tavern on Rush, they are all very excited to be moving into the new space and carrying on the great name of Stefani’s Tavern on Rush for at least another quarter century.
