Utah – the Beehive State – is known for its excellent honey, but the state also boasts a number of rather unusual regional specialties. Funeral potatoes, a kind of casserole, is big in Utah, as are pastrami burgers, sandwiches of beef patties topped with slices of the cured, peppered brisket.

If, however, you’re aiming a little higher and looking for the best steaks west of the Mississippi, go to Salt Lake City, which hosts some of the best steak houses in the western United States.

Here are five of the best steak houses in Salt Lake City, each offering a little something different but all serving fantastic red meat.

Spencer's for Steaks & Chops

Ruby River.  Voted Utah’s best steakhouse by numerous regional news outlets, Ruby River continues to go strong with some of the undeniably best beef in the country.  All of the Ruby River steaks are U.S. grain-fed beef, cut fresh daily and aged 21 days.  The prime rib is slow roasted for hours and topped with freshly grated horseradish, fantastic. The hand-cut sirloin is topped with garlic butter and asparagus, and the filet mignon is wrapped in premium smoked peppercorn bacon, which holds all the moist goodness in the meat. If you love steak, Ruby River is where you want to eat tonight.

Five Alls Fine Dining.  Though designed with Old English styling, the dining room at Five Alls Fine Dining serves some of the best all-American steaks you will find anywhere.  There are the classics like New York strip and filet, the latter of which can be done up a la Oscar with crab, asparagus and Bearnaise sauce.  The signature filet, however, is nine ounces topped with sauteed mushrooms, onions, bacon, and Burgundy wine, served on a lightly toasted English muffin with blue cheese (you want it!).

Spencer’s for Steaks & Chops.  Located in the Hilton Salt Lake City Center, Spencer’s for Steaks & Chops has been serving U.S.D.A. prime steaks for over twenty years.  There are some truly original items on the menu, including Millionaire’s Bacon (with blue cheese, dates and balsamic reduction) and smoked steak tacos, but what you definitely want to order are one of their big, beautiful steaks, like prime filet, rib eye and New York Strip. There are, of course, some spectacular lamb chops, and they come in either 4 or 6 chop portions (if you’re really hungry, opt for the 6; you won’t be sorry).

Braza Grill

Braza Grill. Located in Murray, just outside Salt Lake City, Braza Grill is the place to go if you want meat, endless slices of delicious, carefully prepared meat.  Braza Grill offers a churrasco experience: many different cuts and styles of meat are brought to your table, where big, beautiful pieces of meat are sliced off just for you…and you can keep going until you are as full as you want to be. Top sirloin, pork sausage, tenderloin, spicy chicken, garlic steak and much, much more are there, freshly cooked over an open fire and served in abundance whenever you want more. Bring a big appetite to Braza Grill and have yourself a big time.

Christopher’s Prime Tavern & Grill.  The steaks at Christopher’s Prime Tavern & Grill are sourced from the best beef farms and prepared with creativity and style. Niman Ranch provides the twelve-ounce U.S.D.A. Prime “Baseball Cut,” dressed in peppercorn butter, as well as the twenty-two ounce “Cowboy” bone-in ribeye, dry aged for 28 days.  The steaks are solid, and served simply, but if you feel the need to dress it up a little, there are enhancements like Oscar-style crab cakes, garlic shrimp, and chimichurri sauce…or you can just enjoy this beautiful red meat with nothing more than salt.
