Burwell's Stone Fire Grill - Charleston

A consistent favorite for Diner's Choice, Burwell's Stone Fire Grill is situated in the historic Market District. The restaurant attracts a steady flow of local movers and shakers as well as out-of-town visitors. Burwell's is also a popular stop for happy hour.

Maximize

Though Burwell's operates as a classic Southern steakhouse, it also amplifies local ingredients on the menu. For example, there are pickled root vegetables in the deviled eggs. Also, the green tomato chow chow accompanying the lump crab cake is local. And the poached peach salad is always full of local, seasonal ingredients.

There are four different steak cuts at Burwell's, including a 10-ounce filet, 14-ounce New York strip and eight-ounce wagyu. All steaks are wood-fire grilled. Also on the menu: duck gumbo, classic jambalaya and shrimp pasta in a Creole cream sauce.

This place is fantastic. They source their beef and veggies locally, and offer multiple options for "upgrading" each plate. The deviled egg appetizer is to die for! (The creme brulee, too, wow!) The food was absolutely succulent, the service was top notch (we had 1 server and 3 runners checking in on us), and the ambiance was cozy and warm. Not too quiet, and not too loud - it was just right! They have a bar, as well, for those who want to stop in and not sit to eat, and the location is prime: right at the end of the market, with self parking right next door (!) in addition to the meters on the street in front (which are often always already occupied). Will return again soon - maybe next time for the aged prime rib dinner, which called to me - even though I ordered the Strip (my favorite cut). Those Truffle Parmesan mashed potatoes? Get two helpings, legit.

We had Thanksgiving dinner here and everything was fantastic. The served a 3 course prix fixe menu with a few options for each course including some standard offerings and some special holiday only special items. We took pictures of the salad and appetizers (crab cake, porkbelly, duck, shrimp selections), but forgot to capture the main course and dessert! The staff was so helpful and accommodating. Highly recommend!

Great steaks, pleasant lively atmosphere. Properly cooked and well seasoned, she crab soup was excellent. Steak frites are salted with a touch of sugar was quite nice and different. Service was average but satisfactory, good effort and understanding the challenge of help shortages. Drinks were quite nice. Would definitely return.

Kayla took care of our group of 5 and our experience was excellent. The marinated venison was killer and seasonal salad was one of the best salads I’ve ever had before. Kayla was extremely knowledgeable and made awesome recommendations, not to mention her attitude made it impossible to be anything but happy and excited to be at Burwell’s. We will be back.

We visited Burwell's Grill for our anniversary dinner while in Charleston, SC. We were very pleased we decided to drop in to this establishment. We weren't sure we would get in because we didn't have a reservation. We were one of the first in the door at opening so they decided they could get us in. I ordered the filet and added shrimp and my wife ordered the filet as well. The steaks were ordered medium and they came out exactly as ordered. All of the food was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Our waited was very knowledgeable and attentive to us throughout the meal. Overall, this was an excellent dinner and the best we had on our trip. If you're in the area and looking for an excellent dinner, you should definitely give this place a try.

Food…AMAZING! Highly recommend the seasonal salad and the shrimp pasta. The service was outstanding. Our Waiter was Michael, really enjoyed him. He was very knowledgeable of the menu and gave great recommendations.
