Tsunami Japanese Steakhouse

Tsunami Japanese Steakhouse - St. Petersburg

The Japanese steakhouse concept takes diners on a journey far removed from the American experience. And, of course, while American steakhouses are magnificent, sometimes you want to step out of the norm. Tsunami Japanese Steakhouse, in St. Petersburg, Fla., does that splendidly with an interactive experience that places you directly in front of the chef.

Diners who reserve the interactive, hibachi experience will sit at a large, oval table with the chef in the center. On a sizzling hot grill, he'll cook steaks, seafood, chicken and vegetables in traditional Japanese fashion. It's part entertainment as it is a unique dining experience.

Those wanting a more low-key experience may opt for a table away from the action. They may order hibachi dishes as well as traditional Japanese fare. Tsunami offers an expansive list of maki rolls and sashimi.

There are rolls made by hand as well as specialty rolls such as the tempura bagel roll (salmon and cream cheese rolled in seaweed and rice, served tempura style with eel sauce, spicy mayo and scallions), sumo roll (tempura shrimp, "krabstick," Japanese mayo, asparagus and cucumber rolled in seaweed and rice, topped with salmon, avocado, scallions, eel sauce and spicy mayo) and the surf and turf roll ("krabstick," asparagus, cucumber, Japanese mayo, avocado and tempura chips rolled in seaweed and rice, topped with seared filet mignon seasoned with salt, pepper and seven spice, scallions and eel sauce).

There's a special children's menu featuring habachi chicken, salmon, scallops and filet mignon, plus a $15 corkage fee per bottle for those bringing their own wine. It's BYOB.
