Best DC Steakhouses for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are all about self-sacrifice, about cutting out those things you may like the most. One common resolution is to drop a few unwanted pounds, and one sure-fire way to do that is to cutdown on drinks and rich red meat and eat more low-cal salads and fish.

Somewhat ironically, six of DC’s best steakhouses give you lots of options for salads and fish and other foods that taste so good, you won’t feel like you’re making any sacrifices at all when you forgo the steak…and you may still drop a few pounds.

Bourbon Steak. Ah, bourbon and steak may be the two specific pleasures you’re avoiding as part of your New Year’s resolutions to moderate your intake of liquor and red meat. Instead of one of the delicious chunks of Bourbon Steak’s butter-poached meat, make a selection from the substantial raw bar or have a steamed Atlantic halibut (fantastic with fennel and enoki mushrooms). The salt-baked potato is a good choice for the side (skip the butter because…New Year’s resolution).

Claudia’s Steakhouse. Wedge salad, baby Kale, Peaches and Greens, just some of the salads available at Claudia’s Steakhouse – get your dressing on the side and use it sparingly to maintain your virtuous resolution. For your main protein, there’s unbelievable fish: grilled salmon, Branzino and scallops, so beautifully prepared, and so delicious, you will not feel the pain of your tremendous personal sacrifices.

BLT Steak. Yes, at BLT Steak, there’s a Burger Board and a Fondue Menu, but you’re not having any of that right now, right? Instead, you’re going for the roasted beets or chopped vegetable salad. For your main, we have your number and we know what you want: a grilled Branzino or tuna, perhaps? Maybe some grilled kale or Brussels sprouts on the side. You are so good.

District Chophouse and Brewery. Lots of salads here, and some good low-cal options like chop-chop salad with turkey and sear sashimi tuna with cucumber. For your main, enjoy some good alternatives to steak including Citrus Salmon and Chicken Piccata, both lower in calories than a big juicy steak, and likely as satisfying.

Morton’s The Steakhouse. With a name known across the country and around the world, Morton’s the Steakhouse leverages its impressive volume to source the best seafood you’ll find anywhere: miso-marinated sea bass, honey-balsamic glazed salmon and much more. For salads, there’s about as much greenery here as you could imagine at any steakhouse: sliced beefsteak tomatoes, chopped house salad, spinach salad and many other variations on the dressed leaf.

The Prime Rib. The Prime Rib bills itself as “a civilized steakhouse,” but like so many steakhouses, it also has a superior selection of fish and seafood…and even salads. From the water, there are Chilean Seabass and Yellowfin Ahi Tuna, as well as Wild Salmon. From the earth, there are Hearts of Lettuce and Caesar Salads that will be so good to eat that you will not miss your steak for just one moment (but if you choose to share one of the big beautiful steaks here, there are many excellent options – and if you share with a dining companion, that’s half-the-calories of a regular order!).
